Sora Lasted Six Months: Downloads Fell 45% Before OpenAI Pulled the Plug

OpenAI's standalone video app launched in September 2025. By March 2026 it was being shut down.

When OpenAI launched its standalone Sora app in September 2025, AI video looked like the next big consumer category. Six months later, on March 24, 2026, OpenAI announced it was shutting the whole thing down. By then, according to Axios, downloads had already fallen 45 percent.

The app and web version closed on April 26. The API followed on September 24. From launch to final shutdown, the product lasted about a year.

The numbers behind the decision

OpenAI's public explanation was brief. The company said it would discontinue Sora in both the consumer app and the API as it narrows its focus and its compute demand grows, and that the Sora research team would move to world simulation research for robotics.

Axios, which first reported the decision, added the context OpenAI left out:

  • Usage was falling. Axios reported a 45 percent drop in downloads by January 2026.
  • Video is expensive to run. Axios reported that Sora consumed significant compute at a time when OpenAI was prioritizing capital, chips and enterprise products.
  • The company's priorities shifted. Axios reported that OpenAI is putting capital, chips and enterprise products ahead of experimental consumer bets, as competition from Anthropic and Google grows.

Put simply, Sora was costly to run and was being used less. For a company with other places to spend its compute, that combination was enough.

What happened to users' videos

OpenAI's help center lays out the exit. Users could export their content from a dedicated sunset page and were told to do it as soon as possible. Purchased credits can still be used in Codex, and refunds go through the ChatGPT subscription process. After the export window, OpenAI says it will permanently delete data associated with Sora.

For a casual user, that is an inconvenience. For a creator or small studio that built a library of AI video in Sora, it is a deadline. Anything not exported is gone.

Meanwhile, AI video did not die

It would be easy to read Sora's end as a verdict on AI video. The rest of the market says otherwise. Three weeks after OpenAI's announcement, Adobe said on April 15 that Firefly now offers more than 30 AI models, including video models such as Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1, Runway Gen-4.5 and Ray3.14. In June, Adobe added product videos generated from photos and storyboard-to-video features.

The demand for AI video is real. What failed was a standalone app built around one company's model, competing with platforms that host many models and sit inside tools creators already use.

The lesson for anyone using AI tools

Sora was not a small startup that ran out of money. It was a product from one of the best-funded companies in AI, and it still lasted about a year. That is the uncomfortable takeaway for creators and businesses: any AI tool can be discontinued when the economics change, regardless of who makes it.

  • Export as you go. Do not use any AI tool as your only archive.
  • Save your prompts and settings. If the model disappears, you can recreate the look elsewhere.
  • Watch the signals. Falling usage, quiet feature freezes and price changes often come before a shutdown.

Sora will be remembered for its launch demos. It may be more useful to remember it for how quickly it ended.

Frequently asked questions

When did OpenAI shut down Sora?

OpenAI announced the shutdown on March 24, 2026. The Sora app and web experience closed on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API closed on September 24, 2026.

Why did OpenAI shut down Sora?

OpenAI tied the decision to narrowing its focus as compute demand grows. Axios reported that Sora used significant compute and that downloads had fallen 45 percent by January 2026.

What happened to Sora videos?

OpenAI let users export their content from a sunset page and advised doing it as soon as possible. After the export window, OpenAI says it permanently deletes Sora data.
